Last Resort Q&A: Robert Patrick — ‘Prosser’s The One Behaving Correctly!’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- One of the best things about ABC’s freshman dramaLast resort   is the pairing up of Andre Braugher’s Captain Marcus Chaplin and Robert Patrick’s Master Chief Joseph Prosser on screen.
Since the show’s premiere at the end of September, the two characters have been on conflicting courses, which began when Andre’s Capt. Chaplin refused an authenticated fire order to nuke Pakistan and Robert’s Master Chief was left appalled by the captain saying, “No.” And if you ask Robert – which AccessHollywood.com did – he believes many viewers are totally in tune with Prosser’s position.
“I think there’s a lot of people in America that — when they look at the situation — would go, ‘You know what? Prosser’s the one that’s behaving correctly,’” the actor told Access.
While Prosser’s ties to the group that tried to reach their superiors (in the premiere episode) landed him in a makeshift island brig, Capt. Chaplin learned after incidents in recent weeks the meaning of the phrase “better the devil you know.” But now that he’s let Prosser out of the brig and sent him back to look after the men and eight women of the Colorado, can the COB (Chief of the Boat) be trusted?
Robert answered that question and if he’s going to continue to give Lieutenant Grace Shepard grief, after a quick chat with Access about “Last Resort” getting an accidental shout out during the Vice Presidential debate last week.
AccessHollywood.com: So, the debate… Joe Biden kept calling Paul Ryan ‘my friend,’ which Daniel Lissing (as Seal James King) called the island kingpin thug in Episode 1. The VP also said the words ‘Last Resort’ and he kept talking about nukes. So I’m wondering — did you guys pay him for these mentions?
Robert Patrick: (Laughs.) That’s funny. I saw it. I watched and I noticed ‘Last Resort,’ and I guess they do use ‘my friend’… That’s in that scene, the one where [James is] going to one up him.
Access: The line Daniel said was something like, ‘Where I come from, when someone calls you ‘friend,’ they don’t mean it.’
Robert: You’re absolutely right. I don’t know (laughs). Maybe [‘Last Resort’ co-creator and executive producer] Shawn Ryan did work something out. I don’t know what his political affiliations are. That certainly was a plug. And it went over pretty good.

Red Bull Stratos LIVE: Watch Felix Baumgartner Break The Speed Of Sound

Red Bull Stratos, a project five years in the making, will finally try to take flight today. Skydiver Felix Baumgartner will fall from near-space about 23 miles above the Earth’s surface, breaking the speed of sound in the process. He will be the first free-falling human to break the sound barrier. Baumgartner will also collect three other world records: highest manned balloon flight, highest altitude jump (both will be 120,000 feet) and longest time in free fall (about five-and-a-half minutes).
The team’s plan to launch this week has been delayed by windy conditions, but the team hopes today will be the day. Follow our live updates below by refreshing your browser; all times are EST.
1:28PM No heating in his face mask is not a problem in capsule, but “would be an issue upon jumping.” No kidding.
1:25PM Here’ an awesome angrl of Mission Control  we haven’t been shown on the live broadcast. That’s a lot of monitors.
1:24PM And we’re told visor heating is still an issue. We still haven’t heard any radio transmissions between Mission Control and the capsule since they were cut when Baumgartner first mentioned issue. Probably not the best way of handling things…
1:22PM So close now. Broadcast makes mention that balloon has traveled higher than calculated float altitude in both test jumps. The jump might actually take place from closer to 130,000 feet if balloon keeps rising.
1:19PM And he’s passed it. Baumgartner now heading for the record for highest manned balloon flight, set in 1961.
1:18PM Baumgartner is closing in on 102,800 feet, the altitude of Joe Kittinger’s record 1960 jump. He apparently made the jump with a slight tear in his suit, which is pretty much insane.
1:14PM The capsule now passing 97,000 feet, Baumgartner’s jump altitude in his July test jump.
1:10PM Baumgartner has two parachutes on his back, his main rig and a reserve chute. He has to be traveling at about 172 miles per hour or slower for them to be deployed safely. The main chute is 270-square-feet and will be deployed at about 5,000 feet above Earth.
1:08PM We’ve got about 30 minutes or so to go. Baumgartner gives the thumbs up from inside the cockpit, so either the face mask heating issue is resolved or our fearless flier is wearing his chapstick. Hoping it’s the former.
1:05PM Capsule now moving at 14 miles per hour. Nearing in on 90,000 feet about an hour and a half in.

As Michonne, Danai Gurira Brings New Life To ‘Walking Dead’

When “The Walking Dead” ended last season, we caught a glimpse of a hooded stranger  who rescued Andrea from death at the hands of a zombie – by slicing off the “walker’s” head with a katana sword. Perhaps even more startling, the stranger had two zombie “pets” chained to her whose arms and jaws had been cut off.
Who is she? As viewers will see when AMC’s hit series returns tonight, she’s Michonne, a tough warrior woman. She’s one of the most popular characters from the comic-book series on which the TV show is based, about a band of people desperately trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the zombies.
Michonne is portrayed by Danai Gurira, an actress previously seen on HBO’s “Treme” and in the film “The Visitor.” Gurira, who was born in the U.S. and grew up in Zimbabwe, is also an award-winning playwright.
Gurira sat down with Speakeasy at New York Comic Con, where she and other “Walking Dead” cast members appeared this weekend, to talk about the show, her new role and the qualities she shares with Michonne. An edited transcript:
Gurira sat down with Speakeasy at New York Comic Con, where she and other “Walking Dead” cast members appeared this weekend, to talk about the show, her new role and the qualities she shares with Michonne. An edited transcript:
Michonne is a much-beloved character by fans of the comic – is the reaction you’ve gotten so far more “we love you” or “we love Michonne, you’d better not mess this up”?
I haven’t heard the latter too much at all. I think they’re just happy she’s being embodied, they’re happy that she’s come to life, to three-dimensional life, and that’s mainly what I’ve seen, just a lot of love.
What drives a woman like Michonne? She obviously has to be a very capable woman to be wielding a sword and parading around with two armless jawless zombies.
I think she is a very intense and mysterious woman. I think we can all understand that she’s also driven by the repercussions, who you become when that type of trauma hits, what becomes of you, do you turn into a different person, what sort of person do you turn into. And I think that’s what’s interesting about Michonne – you wonder who was she before this happened, and what haunts her, that thing in her that allows her to turn into a different person when the apocalypse hits.
What can the fans expect from the new season?
They can expect everything that they would not expect. They can expect to remain on the edge of their seat. They can expect to never be comfortable. They can expect to be unable to predict just about anything. And they can expect to be utterly entertained.

College Football Rankings 2012: Teams Unfairly Placed Too Low This Week

After another round of national rankings in the 2012 college football season, a few teams were not given the credit their performances have earned them.
Alabama topped the AP Top 25 poll  again, taking all 60 first-place votes. The Crimson Tide’s dominance thus far makes it impossible to overrate them, and they deserve
Oregon checked in at No. 2 as the Ducks continued to breeze through their competition thus far. South Carolina rose to No. 3 after an extremely impressive victory over Georgia.
These three teams are correctly ranked, but as the poll continues, there are three other programs that should be slotted higher.

No. 5 West Virginia
While the three highest-ranked teams have rock-solid arguments for their spots in the poll, the No. 4 rank is not as easy to decide.
Florida was placed into the slot this week after defeating LSU, while West Virginia was given the No. 5 rank after defeating Texas.
While LSU may have been a more highly regarded team heading into Saturday’s games, the team had struggled leading up to the loss and the Gators had the advantage of playing at home.
The Mountaineers marched into Austin and showed both a high-powered and balanced offensive attack that led the team to victory. West Virginia’s ability to win on the road should have had them placed ahead of Florida this week.

Columbus Day 2012: Hero, Villain or Both?

"In fourteen hundred ninety-two/ Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
"He had three ships and left from Spain/ He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain." -- Source Unknown
Time was when sailor Christopher Columbus unequivocally
Time was when sailor Christopher Columbus unequivocally "discovered" America, but that was before the debate about his legacy recast him in school history books as the Italian explorer who, more accurately, raised and solidified European awareness of the Americas after arriving Oct. 12, 1492, in what would become known as the Bahamas.
In short, Columbus wasn't the first European to reach the Americas. But he made the most of it, for better or worse. And that's where the Columbus Day debate continues, including periodic calls to dump or modify the holiday.

Native-American Day The United States is hardly alone in celebrating Columbus Day, but even here it's not unanimous.
South Dakota, for instance, clearly falls on the other side of the debate, after 22 years ago changing the second Monday in October from Columbus Day to Native American Day in honor of the indigenous people who suffered near-annihilation after Columbus opened doors to the New World.
Italian Heritage Many Italian-Americans defend Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage and the generations of Italians who've contributed mightily to U.S. prominence through their work and philanthropy. Of that there's no doubt, although critics, including some Italian-Americans, have pointed out that the Oct. 12, 1492, arrival itself is no representation of the Italian experience. Supporters claim him as a source of pride, however, not unlike other cultures that honor their sons and daughters as pioneers.

There are 30-plus U.S. cities and townships named Columbus, and apparently little push to rename any of them, suggesting that the debate has long been settled for some people with the closest association to the explorer.

Pittsburgh Steelers: 5 Lessons from Win over Philadelphia Eagles

The Pittsburghs   evened their record (2-2) against their in-state rivals, the  Philadelphia Eagles   on Sunday afternoon.
And they had to. It would have been remarkably difficult to make the playoffs if they had gone 1-3.
It wasn't the cleanest game you've ever watched, but as they say, "A win is a win."
In their first four games, the Steelers have not made things very easy on themselves, suffering injuries to key players and amassing a huge number of penalties (more on that in a minute).
Their offense has looked stunted, and their defense has looked porous at times, but against the Eagles, they managed to do enough to squeak out a win.
Let's look at the five things we can take from this game going into a short week.

Google celebrates Niels Bohr’s 127th birthday with Google doodle

Sunday is the 127th birthday of physicist Niels Bohr and Google celebrated the event by placing a  on the Google home page; the news has created an Internet buzz Sunday morning. Google periodically displays a Google doodle to celebrate a birthday or event from history, and as people pull up the Google homepage, they try to discover what the doodle is about for that day. See the links below for other Google doodles.
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark and he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. He was well known in the science world for his incredible understanding of atomic structure and quantum mechanics.
Neils also had a strong influence on his family and his son, Aage Bohr, also received the Nobel Prize in 1975.
Niels Bohr was well known for the “Copenhagen interpretation, Complementarity, Bohr model, Sommerfeld–Bohr theory, BKS theory, Bohr-Einstein debates and Bohr magneton,” according to Seroundtable.com.
See the Google doodle for Sunday, October 07, 2012 above.
Bohr died in 1962.

Notre Dame Football: Iconic Program on Right Track to BCS Glory

After a disappointing 2011 season that saw the Notre Dame Fighting Irish finish 8-5 for the second year in a row, the team has addressed their biggest issues and currently hold a 5-0 record.
Another huge 41-3 win over longtime rival Miami proves that the Irish are back to being a legitimate contender and want a shot at BCS glory.
While there is no doubting that Notre Dame is far from perfect this season, the improved fundamentals of not turning the ball over and letting the running game open up the passing attack has made it very clear that the Fighting Irish are here to stay.

Kebede wins Chicago Marathon in course record

CHICAGO (AP) - Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia shattered the course record in winning the Chicago Marathon on Sunday morning.
Kebede pulled away late and was all alone, waving to the crowd as he approached the finish at Grant Park and crossing the line in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 38 seconds. That easily eclipsed the previous mark of 2:05:37 set by Kenya's Moses Mosop last year and was more than enough to beat countryman Feyisa Lilesa.
The women's race was also a thriller, with Atsede Baysa of Ethiopia edging Kenya's Rita Jeptoo by about a step. The two traded leads down the stretch, with Jeptoo briefly grabbing it as they turned into Grant Park and Baysa quickly regaining it.
She kept looking over her shoulder during the final stretch and barely hung on, with Jeptoo making one final push and raising her arms at the finish line.
Baysa broke the tape, though, finishing in 2:22:03, one second ahead of Jeptoo. That ended the three-year run of Russia's Liliya Shobukhova, who placed fourth at 2:22:59. Kenya's Lucy Kabuu (2:22:41) was third.
On a cool day that seemed made for a course record, Kebede delivered.
He and Lilesa started to break away over the final three miles, and with about a mile to go, it was clear that this was Kebede's race.
The runner-up to the late Sammy Wanjiru in 2010 in a stirring finish, he simply came on strong as they approached the finish on the way to his second major marathon victory. He also took the top prize at London in 2010.
Ethiopian Tilahun Regassa (2:05:28) was third.
With 42-degree temperatures at the start, the conditions were good for a race marked by tragedy and mishap in recent years.
Chad Schieber, a 35-year-old Michigan police officer and father of three, died during the 2007 marathon in near-90 degree heat.
Race organizers improved communication among various agencies and the runners. They also added more water distribution points and medical aid stations, but tragedy struck again when William Caviness, a 35-year-old North Carolina firefighter, collapsed about 500 yards from the finish line on a day when temperatures reached the high 70s.
There was also a mishap in 2006, when champion Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya slipped on a wet decal and banged his head as he crossed the finish line.
Mosop won in 2011 with the then-course record but was recovering from an injury and missed Sunday's race. That left Wesley Korir as the favorite in his fifth Chicago appearance after winning in Boston this year, but he dropped off the lead pack around the 20th mile and took fifth.
Shobukhova was looking to put aside a disappointing Olympics and become just the second four-time winner - male or female - in Chicago. The only other runner to do that was Khalid Khannouchi (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002).
She had been dealing with a hamstring problem and came up short in this race, after she was unable to finish at the London Games due to stomach cramps.

Obamacare and the Supreme Court: Do We Need Government Help with Health?

It is the best of times, if you are an Obamacare supporter. It is the worst of times, if you are against it.
Or is it? Commentators have pointed out that this was a very complex ruling, and it will be a while before everything is sorted out. Some, like State's TOM Scocca, are asking whether defecting and swinging the vote in favor of the Affordable Care Act was a “canny” move on the part of Chief Justice Roberts to restrict regulatory power under the commerce clause. Randy Barnett calls this ''a weird victory for federalism'',Richard Epstein''claims that Roberts’ argument that going without health insurance is now something the government can tax “like buying gasoline or earning income” is ''little short of absurd'' ,” It will be a while before this is all untangled.

Lesnar, St. Pierre winners at UFC 100

LAS VEGAS – Brock Lesnar retained the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title by stopping Frank Mir in the second round and Georges St. Pierre put on the performance of his career in blanking Thiago Alves at UFC 100 on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Lesnar took Mir down and pounded him with rights along the cage, forcing referee Herb Dean to stop it at 1:48 of the second. After the win, Lesnar made an obscene gesture to the crowd with both hands.
St. Pierre, who was all class, won by scores of 50-45, 50-45, 50-44
Lesnar, who lost to Mir last year at UFC 81 on a first-round submission, shouted to the crowd, “I love it! Keep booing! Keep booing!”
Mir only had one offensive move, a knee early in the second round. Lesnar took Mir down in the first and pounded him with rights, then did much the same in the second until it was stopped.
St. Pierre never allowed Alves into the fight. He took him down almost at will and was constantly working on the ground. The powerful Alves was able to force his way off the mat and get back to his feet, but he took a load of punishment from a champion who may have earned the outright pound-for-pound top status.
St. Pierre injured his groin in the third, but it hardly seemed to affect him in what he repeatedly called the toughest fight of his career.
