After another round of national rankings in the 2012 college football
season, a few teams were not given the credit their performances have
earned them.
Alabama topped the AP Top 25 poll again, taking all 60 first-place votes. The Crimson Tide’s dominance thus far makes it impossible to overrate them, and they deserve
Oregon checked in at No. 2 as the Ducks continued to breeze through their competition thus far. South Carolina rose to No. 3 after an extremely impressive victory over Georgia.
These three teams are correctly ranked, but as the poll continues, there are three other programs that should be slotted higher.
No. 5 West Virginia
While the three highest-ranked teams have rock-solid arguments for their spots in the poll, the No. 4 rank is not as easy to decide.
Florida was placed into the slot this week after defeating LSU, while West Virginia was given the No. 5 rank after defeating Texas.
While LSU may have been a more highly regarded team heading into Saturday’s games, the team had struggled leading up to the loss and the Gators had the advantage of playing at home.
The Mountaineers marched into Austin and showed both a high-powered and balanced offensive attack that led the team to victory. West Virginia’s ability to win on the road should have had them placed ahead of Florida this week.
No. 13 Oklahoma
The Sooners’ season took a hit when the team lost Kansas State at home.
Oklahoma slightly repaired its reputation with a convincing victory over Texas Tech. This win does not mean that OU should be ranked vastly higher than it is now, but the Sooners should be ranked higher than Florida State.
After losing to unranked North Carolina State, the No. 3 Seminoles dropped to No. 12 in this week’s poll, and should have fallen further.
Oklahoma’s only loss is against an extremely tough Kansas State team, and this should have them ranked higher than FSU.
No. 14 Georgia
While Georgia may have suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of South Carolina, this has been the team’s only defeat of the season.
Nothing went right for the Bulldogs and they failed to compete in the difficult road matchup with the Gamecocks, but up until this point, the team has won every game convincingly.
But they too deserve to be ranked ahead of Florida State. Losing to a team that did not receive any consideration for the Top 25 poll in Week 6 should have caused the Seminoles to fall more than nine spots.
USC dropped 11 spots when losing to Stanford earlier this year, while Georgia also fell nine spots due to their loss to the Gamecocks. Losing to ranked teams should not be punished the same as losing to teams that were an afterthought heading into the weekend. FSU is lucky to be ranked at No. 12, as both Georgia and Oklahoma should be in front of the Seminoles.
